CSE review: Planning Commission's interim report on low carbon strategies for inclusive growth

The Center for Science and Environment has reviewed the "Interim Report of Expert Group on Low Carbon Strategies for Inclusive Growth" set up by the Planning Commission of India, and has put its comments up for public debate and discussions. CSE's review shows that there is a lack of ambition in the Interim Report and there is no overarching strategy for low carbon strategies for inclusive growth.

Licence to Kill, Not Anymore

HIL's (Hindustan Insecticide Limited) licence to produce endosulfan was cancelled by the Kerala government on May 27. The Gujarat agriculture department too has seized the permit of nearly 80 endosulfan manufacturing and formulating units in the state.


Public hearing for expansion of UCIL's Bhatin mines violates EIA notification

The public hearing for the expansion of Bhatin mines of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) was held on May 26, 2011. The public hearing was a clear violation the EIA notification and did not allow stakeholders to participate in the process. Child's Play

imageBureau of Indian Standards(BIS) released its draft regulations on standards on phthalates in toys on April 21, 2011.  The draft standards have been released following a Bombay High Court Order on March 24, 2011. The court's direction was in response to the Public Interest Litigation (PIL)filed by the Consumer Welfare Association in 2007 demanding stringent regulations for phthalates in toys.

A week after the ban

Its been a week since the Supreme Court issued the order for the interim ban on endosulfan. There is no official confirmation on the joint committee yet, when they have to present the interim report within 8 weeks, from May 13, to the Supreme Court. It is after the interim report is submitted will the apex court take a final call on whether the pesticide should be allowed or banned.
