The Supreme Court met today to decide what needed to be done with the unused stock of endosulfan as well as propose alternatives for endosulfan. The endosulfan manufacturers requested for a four week period to submit their proposal to dispose the pesticide. The petitioners, Democratic Youth Federation of India, too will file an affidavit on how, they believe the stocks should be disposed. No call was taken on the alternatives for endosulfan yet. The court will meet again on Nov 11.

Calls for strict monitoring while packaging
The Supreme Court has allowed the exports of 1090.596 MT of technical grade endosulfan for which export orders were received prior to the ban on May 13. But it has reiterated its earlier order, banning the use, sale and production of the pesticide.
Status Quo in Endosulfan
The Supreme Court has reserved its order on the exports of endosulfan for Friday September 30. The Court had met today to decide whether exports should be allowed or not. The petitioners , Democratic Youth Federation of India, requested for some more time as they had received the response from the joint committee very late and were unable to frame a response on the exports affidavit.

The Supreme Court on August 5 gave a three week extension to the Joint Committee to submit in its interim report details on the possibility of exports or disposal off the existing stocks of endosulfan.

The demand to ban endosulfan across the country could receive a double blow as both the counter affidavit of the Union of India and the Joint Committee Report of the DG-ICMR and Agriculture Commissioner seem to be riding on the unscientific use of endosulfan rather than the harmful impacts of the pesticide on human and animal health and the environment.

Excel sends legal notice to scientists
Excel Crop Care is back to attacking scientists. S Ganesan on behalf of Excel Crop Care, the biggest endosulfan manufacturer in the country, has sent a legal notice to the Calicut Medical college for their report on endosulfan. The report indicted endosulfan for the health problems of those living in the cashew plantations in Kasaragod, Kerala.

Studies Indict Endosulfan
The Pesticides Manufactures and Formulators Association of India (PMFAI) continues to be in denial on the role the pesticide had on the health of the people in Kasaragod. In a reply affidavit filed by the association, they have cited iodine deficiency, radiation and genetic inbreeding, as the cause for the health problems in the district.
Countdown to the Supreme Court Hearing
The eight weeks deadline for the Supreme Court appointed joint committee on endosulfan ended on July 13. The hearing of the case is scheduled for July 15.
