Certificate Course on Environmental Management in Cement Industry

Cement Industry is resource and energy intensive. Indian cement sector has recognized this aspect very well and during past two decades, it has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions through improved energy efficiency; increased use of alternative fuels and optimization of resource use efficiency. The investments made in pollution control measures have drastically reduced air emissions; water pollution and waste generation. However, there are numerous challenges that still need to be addressed to make this sector environmentally sustainable and regulatory compliant.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), New Delhi and Cement Manufacturer’s Association (CMA) is jointly organizing a Three (3) days capacity building programme from December 20 to 22, 2017 at 41, Tughalakabad Institutional Area, New Delhi, exclusively for cement industry professionals to strengthen their capability to address such challenges.

The takeaway from this training program for the participants includes an improved understanding of;

  1. Identification of and compliance to current legal requirements for cement, mining and power industry (including waste management, hazardous chemical rules and ground water abstraction).

  2. Conducting environmental impact assessment study for Cement Industry

  3. State of the art pollution control  technologies for Cement Industry

  4. Implementation of Continuous emission monitoring system (CEMS) – challenges and opportunities.

  5. Water Conservation and Green belt development.

  6. Case studies on Alternate fuels, GHG reduction, PAT and REC related issues

  7. Self-regulation-a tool for business excellence.

During the training, the case studies on environmental management and its benefits will be discussed. Success stories of effective environmental management in cement industry and their benefits would also be shared with participants.

Announcements

  • Centre for Science and Environment recognises Social Impact Assessment (SIA) as an important tool to inform decision makers, regulators and stakeholders about the possible social and economic impacts of a development project. To be effective, SIA requires the active involvement of all concerned stakeholders. CSE has developed a five-day training programme aimed at giving practical exposure to participants on SIA with specific reference to infrastructure, mining and other industrial projects.

  • With rapid urbanisation and rising consumption of goods and services, India is facing a massive waste management challenge. Every year, urban India produces 62 million tonne (MT) of municipal solid waste, 31 MT of which is dumped onto landfill sites. Figures for recycling are abysmal; for instance, only 1.5 per cent of e-waste is recycled. The need of the hour is to shift the focus of waste management towards processing and resource recovery.
