India's expanding steel industry is driven by direct reduced iron (DRI) technology -- commonly known as sponge iron. Currently, there are 333 sponge iron factories across the country, and many more are in the pipeline. However, without legitimate regulations, the industry continues to have disastrous impacts on the environment.
New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has documented the current challenges confronting the regulatory status of the sponge iron industry and will be releasing the report on February 11, 2011 in Kolkata. The CSE study has documented the environmental and social impacts of sponge iron clusters in West Bengal and some other states.
