Food Safety and Toxins Unit of the Centre for Science and Environment is looking for an experienced candidate as a Deputy Programme Manager to work on: 

  • A programme aimed at promoting good food and discouraging availability and exposure of bad food 

About CSE
Established in 1980, CSE is known for its rigorous and scientific policy research and advocacy on environmental issues. CSE has helped to shape policies and build public awareness to bring change in the areas of natural resource management, pollution mitigation, food safety, low carbon mitigation, renewable energy initiatives and livelihood security to make growth sustainable and inclusive.

Job profile: 
The candidate is expected to lead and manage the research, advocacy and communication around the Good Food programme, which include domains of junk foods, mid-day meal, public distribution system, Genetically Modified food, pesticides and organic food/farming. The job will entail writing policy papers; communicating to advocate and create awareness through write-ups and position/response documents; and interacting with various stakeholders – policy makers, regulators, media, industry, and civil society – to push for change. 

The research would include collection, analysis and synthesis of data/information from both secondary and primary sources. It would also require coordination with CSE’s pollution monitoring laboratory (PML), which conducts studies on food products. Writing for Down To Earth (CSE’s fortnightly magazine), developing position/response documents based on developments in policy/science/industry, and interacting with media would be an important aspect of the communication involved in the job. The advocacy campaign will include all facets – building networks; writing and making presentations to stakeholders; and organizing and participating in meetings and conferences. The candidate should be open to travel within India and outside.  

Qualification and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-6 years of relevant work experience. Experience in the non-profit sector is not a prerequisite 

  • Candidates with education and understanding of science/lifesciences can apply. However, candidates with experience/training in  the domains of food/nutrition/public health would be preferred; and candidates with reporting/writing/communication experience (such as a science/health journalist) would be preferred

  • This is not a laboratory-based position; candidates with such education/experience and/or intending to work in laboratory must not apply

  • Hard working, self-motivated and disciplined work ethic
