CSE's Environmental Assessment of Jasodharpur Industrial Area in Uttarakhand

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) presented its environmental assessment of Jasodharpur Industrial Area (JIA) in a public meeting on June 11, 2012 held at Maganpur village near Kotdwar town in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand.

The Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board had requested CSE to carry out this assessment.

JIA is a cluster of about 20 steel making factories using induction furnaces. Local communities have been protesting against the air and land pollution in the area due to JIA for about four years now. The community in its protest in December 2011 put as a demand that the environmental assessment of the area be carried out by CSE.

As a result the SPCB requested us to carry out the study. CSE team did a preliminary visit, then collected data and information from various sources and finally did a more comprehensive factory by factory visit of the area.
