Stockholm March 22: CSE awarded prestigious 2005 Stockholm Water Prize You may have read already that CSE has been awarded the prestigious 2005 Stockholm Water Prize for its work in promoting a new paradigm of water management, based on community lead rainwater harvesting.

In its citation, the nominating committee lauded CSE, under the leadership of Sunita Narain, "For a successful recovery of old and generation of new knowledge on water management, a community-based sustainable integrated resource management under gender equity, a courageous stand against undemocratic, top-down bureaucratic resource control, an efficient use of a free press, and an independent judiciary to meet these goals."

The annual prize instituted by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), is awarded to individuals and institutions for making a substantial contribution to the preservation, enhancement or availability of the world's water resources. It includes a US$ 150,000 cash award, which will be presented to CSE in Sweden by King Carl XVI Gustaf in August.

We at CSE are thilled to be awarded this prize as we see it as tribute to the issues that concern us all. We believe this prize helps recognise that water has to become the starting point of poverty removal in millions of villages across the South and that this is only possible, if government's adopt a more participatory approach to water management. The fact that this award has been given by the leading water professionals insitution and is recognised as the equivalent of the Nobel prize for water, shows that this approach has been recognised as being relevant, indeed imperative, by the water community as a whole.
