Training Programme : Mainstreaming Sustainable Urban Water Management

Date:  March
23-26, 2015

Venue: Colombo, Sri Lanka

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a public interest research organization based in New Delhi (India) set up in 1980. It researches into, lobbies for and communicates the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable. The Centre was recipient of the prestigious International Stockholm World Water Prize in year 2005) for its policy influence in building paradigms for community based sustainable water management.

The centre’s awareness action is geared towards building larger societal support for policy, practices and implementation in regions. We believe global cooperation requires participation and engagement from the South. We can effectively leverage our ongoing work in India and South Asia on capacity building, particularly of public institutions and regulatory systems, to help both state and non-state actors to better scrutinize, mediate and balance sustainable water management options across African countries.

About the training

The thematic focus of the training - rainwater harvesting and decentralised sewage treatment including local reuse not only contribute in situ augmentation of water where supply is scarce but also contribute substantially in abatement of pollution in various sources of water - river, water bodies and groundwater in urban areas. The centre is organising the international training programme jointly with Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum, Sri Lanka local partner and host institution at Colombo. The programme combines two trainings namely - rainwater harvesting and decentralised wastewater treatment including local reuse followed by field visit (optional).

Kindly note that the medium of instruction in the training is ENGLISH

Aim

Capacity building of practitioners both state and non state actors in Africa to implement best management practices (BMPs) for sustainable urban water management.

The details of the two training programme (s) are as follows:

URBAN RAINWATER HARVESTING:
March 23-24, 2015

Two day programme will focus on urban rainwater harvesting (RWH) and the potential it holds in augmentation of water availability by using public spaces to recharge their groundwater or store and reuse the rainwater. The training will also showcase examples to bring in required laws to enable individuals to undertake rainwater harvesting. The participants will get the opportunity to plan and design a rainwater harvesting system.

DECENTRALISED WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND REUSE:
March 25 - 26, 2015

Two day programme will focus on decentralised wastewater treatment (DWWT) including recycling and reuse. The training will provide hand on experience in planning, designing implementation of DWWTS and monitoring.

Both the trainings are conducted based on state of the art teaching – learning tools consisting of interactive sessions, experiential learning using detailed case studies, working in groups on planning and designing and class room lectures/instructions.

Field visit (Optional):   March 27-28, 2015

The field exposure will be an opportunity for participants to interact with real implementers, users/beneficiaries of successfully implemented rainwater harvesting and decentralized waste water systems.

Target Participants

Managers from water supply and wastewater agencies (engineers and planners), regulators from state environmental protection agencies ( inspectors and scientists), practitioners both state and non – state (architects, engineers, planners), consultants, academics (faculty, students and researchers) from African countries working in water sector and involved in mainstreaming water and environmental sustainability in urban areas.

Few seats are reserved for local participants from Sri Lanka for cross learning from each others.

Training Fees and Financial Support

No training / registration fees for participants from Africa.

Full cost for return flights, boarding / lodging, local travel related to the training and field visit for the selected participants will be borne by CSE.

Applicants should submit a short CV, a note (750 words) on how this training will benefit him/her or the nominating agency/ institution along with two references (name and contact details).

Last date for application:  February 10, 2015.

Shortlisted candidates will be informed by February 16, 2015.

Feedback of the previous trainings
Decentralised wastewater treatment and Reuse, Nove. 10-13, 2014, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Thanks to the organiser, water aid and CSE. Totally well organised event and it’s very inspiring.

Sirajus Salekin, Practical Action Bangladesh

Field experience was most effective. I recommend this course to my higher officials.

Muhammad Mahbubul Alam
Executive Engineer, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Bangladesh

-----------------------------------------

I think one can directly implement any of the topics/ techniques covered in this course and hopefully I will implement a DWWT system in my upcoming projects.

Md. Shahid Hasan Rabbani
Architect, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Bangladesh

Urban Rainwater Harvesting System 17-19 June, 2014, Dhaka, Bangladesh
The training course is very effective in context of urban as well as coastal areas of Bangladesh. As I am an Engineer of Khulna WASA, this course is very useful for my organisation as well as for my career.

Md Ashekur Rahman, Assistant engineer Khulna WASA, Bangladesh

----------------------------------------

According to me the training programme was very informative and the way it has been organised and delivered (course components) helped to understand the topic properly.

Saiqa Mustari Susmita, Lecturer, University of Asia Pacific, Bangladesh

------------------------------------------

This course made the ultimate reinforcement to my knowledge about RWH. Overall the entire training session was informative, effective and pleasant.”

Ashiq Mohammad Bhuijan, Jr. Structural Engineer, Tarique Hasan and Associates, Bangladesh

Urban Rainwater Harvesting and Decentralised Wastewater Systems, Nov 10-14, 2013, Kathmandu, Nepal
“As our organization is RWH capacity centre in Nepal, the knowledge gained can be used to train and capacitate our partners.”

Charushree Nakarmi, Manager, Rainwater Harvesting Capacity Centre (RHCC)

------------------------------------------

“Previously we were having knowledge on RWH & WWT theoretically but now we are more or less knowledgeable enough to convince ourself and others to adapt these systems. It has given us the clear picture in brief.”

Pratap Maharjan, Intern, GUTHI

------------------------------------------

“I got good technical know-how of RWH and DWWT systems. I am now confident that I will be able to design the structures. Hopefully, I will be able to implement similar projects which LUMANTI develop otherwise by hiring other consultants.”

Lumanti Joshi, Technical Coordinator, LUMANTI-support group for Shelter

Urban Rainwater Harvesting and Decentralised Wastewater Systems, December 10-13, 2013 Kandy, Sri Lanka
Initially I didn’t have enough knowledge on RWH and DWWTs. But now I am confident. I would like to say my sincere thanks to CSE and to LRWHF to arrange a training programme like this.

W.N. Sanjeewani, Public Management Assistant, Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage

------------------------------------------

I will definitely establish a rainwater harvesting system and help to improve maintenance of existing wastewater treatment plant.
