BUILDING BETTER: Certificate Course for "Advanced building technologies and practices for Sustainability"

July 15-17, 2015

CSE completed an extremely successful and overcrowded 3 day training course on ‘Advanced building technologies and practices for sustainability’. It was organized by Green building team of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) for CPWD newly recruited deputy architects and attended by 39 participants and received overwhelming response. The course was very much appreciated by all the participants and CPWD training head and coordinator and the participants expressed their interest to organize such kind of courses as well as specialized thematic courses in near future.

The main purpose of this training was to impart knowledge on Sustainable Building concepts and share best practices and technologies in Green Buildings. The intent was to enable architects to have up-to-date knowledge on what is available in the market, how much it costs, how durable the product is, as well as its impact on the environment, thereby enabling them to design sustainable buildings.

The workshop addressed and focused on following components:-

a) Understanding sustainability principles and codes

b) Sustainable design and methods of construction

c) Green technologies – Energy efficient and water efficient technologies

The first day of the programme started with a lecture delivered by Ms. Anumita Roychowdhury, Executive Director- Research & Advocacy in CSE was wonderful on “OVERVIEW OF SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN BUILDINGS”, the way in which she gave ideas about sustainability and concepts of green buildings. The presentation provided an overview of issues concerning urbanization, building construction and energy use with a special focus on developmental challenges in building sectors. . She highlighted the fact that the India has still to build 70 per cent of its building stock which will be there in 2030. Pointing out that we have great opportunity to develop differently and be more sustainable.

She was followed by a presentation of “National building code (NBC) and ECBC” and delivered by Mr. Sanjay pant from BIS and Mr. Girja Shankar from BEE. Mr. Girja shankar shared the key features and requirements of the ECBC code.

Second day started with a lecture on “SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE” by Architect Mr. Sanjay prakash, Delhi and he talked about the concepts of building physics focusing on the solar geometry and passive design (site and building layout and planning, shading, natural ventilation, natural cooling).

He was followed by Mr. Deependra Prashad, Principal Architect Deependra Prashad, Architects & Planners (DPAP), Delhi and he talked about the “PRIORTIZING MATERIALS IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN”. His presentation examined the types of "green" building materials available and how to select the best ones for your specific needs.  The materials used to construct buildings can make a tremendous difference in preserving natural resources and promoting human health.

The afternoon session focused on “CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION WASTE” and Mr. Avikal Somvanshi highlighted the findings of a study done by CSE. At the end of the day, Mr. Bharat Bhushan former director (scientific) MoEF highlighted the process of EIA for building and construction projects.

The third day started with a technical talk delivered by Mr. Samdarsh Nayyar, Founder, GREEN Horizon, New Delhi on “HVAC energy efficient technologies “ was effective and illustrative for the participants to understands the basics of HVAC systems and new emerging HVAC technologies. He was followed with another technical talk delivered by Mr. Inderjit Ahuja from CSE who highlighted the “passive day lighting strategies and energy efficient lighting technologies”. Later, another lecture was taken from CSE team and highlighted the “energy efficient appliances and solar roof top policies and systems”.

The final session was delivered by CSE water programme unit and highlighted the importance of “RAIN WATER HARVESTING”. They also highlighted the different methods of “WASTE WATER TREATMENT”. This session was very informative in water conservation.

In the feedback session, the participants felt that the programme was of more informative, inspirational and beneficial that enabling them to design sustainable buildings.
