Programme officer Food Safety and Toxins Unit

Food Safety and Toxins of the Centre for Science and Environment is looking for two experienced candidates as Programme Officers to work on:

  1. A programme on regulating use of antibiotics in food producing-animals to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance

  2. A programme on sustainable food production, consumption and regulation

About CSE

Established in 1980, CSE is known for its rigorous and scientific policy research and advocacy on environmental issues. CSE has helped to shape policies and build public awareness to bring change in the areas of natural resource management, pollution mitigation, food safety, low carbon mitigation, renewable energy initiatives and livelihood security to make growth sustainable and inclusive.

Job profile:

The candidate is expected to lead the research, advocacy and communication of the respective programme. The job will entail writing policy papers; communicating through write-ups and articles; and interacting with various stakeholders – policy makers, regulators, media, industry, and NGOs – to push for change.

The research would include collection, analysis and synthesis of data/information from both secondary and primary sources. It would also require coordination with CSE’s pollution monitoring laboratory (PML), which conducts studies on certain food products among others. Writing for Down To Earth, CSE’s fortnightly magazine, and interacting/attending to media queries would be integral to the communication involved in the job. The advocacy campaign will include all facets – building networks; writing and making presentations to stakeholders; and organizing and participating in meetings and conferences. The candidate should be open to limited travel mostly within India.

Qualification and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-6 years of work experience. Experience in the non-profit sector is not a prerequisite

  • Candidates with a bachelors or masters degree. Educational background in science would be preferred but not a prerequisite

  • Candidates who are educated, experienced or are driven to work in one or more domains such as of food, nutrition, agriculture, public health, antimicrobial resistance would be given preference

  • Candidates with relevant reporting/writing/journalistic experience would also be given preference
