EIA workshop for Bangladesh ministry of environment & forest

Recently, Centre for Science and Environment conducted 5 day training programme on Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) in Dhaka for the officials of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Bangladesh. The sectors covered were coal mining, cement, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper and coal based thermal power plant.

The training programme was conducted by CSE under the Bangladesh Environmental Institutional Strengthening Project (BEISP), which is a government of Canada (CIDA) funded project, aims to strengthen the capacity of the ministry officials.

As part of the above training programme, officials also invited to visit coal mine in Jharkand, state of India to understand the impacts of mining on the environment, safety issues and measures, technology adopted, mine reclamation procedure and social impacts. The team comprising of three senior level officials from the ministry visited Piparwar opencast coal mine (Coal India limited), Jamadoba underground mine at Jharia (Tata) and West Bokaro open cast mine (Tata). The officials from Coal India Ltd and Tata met the delegates and interacted with them on all issues to be taken into consideration while opening, operating and closing the mines.
