From
Gross National Produce (GNP) to Gross Nature Produce (GNP)
While India is recording one of world’s fastest economic growth
rates, the country’s poor population remains stagnant for close to
three decades. The country is facing an adverse BoP (Balance of
Poverty) crisis as it generates more poverty than it eradicates. So
the challenge is how to make the economy work for the poor and push
the country’s 300 million poor above the poverty line permanently.
In India poverty is ecological in nature. Close to 60 percent of
India’s population depends on ecological capital for
sustenance. The loss of this capital leads to poverty. For India to
prosper, it needs to ensure sustainable livelihoods for its poor and
mainstream the poor’s experiences into national policies.
The objective of CSE’s NRML unit is to ensure that natural resources
– ecological capital – is used for economic well-being and to
advocate changes in policies to ensure that this is done.
