Will NREGA ensure security against hunger?

The study brings out interesting issues related to productive assets created under the scheme and their management.

Prayas study on Jatropha plantation as part of NREGA

Prayas, a Pune-based NGO, has carried out a study on farmers’ perspectives on Jatropha (bio-fuel crop) plantations in the horticulture programme in Maharashtra, under the employee guarantee scheme (EGS). The study argues that the horticulture linked EGS has disproportionately benefited the non-poor section of the population. The report also raises serious concern over the ‘experimental basis’ on which Jatropha plantation is being taken up under EGS. “The purpose of EGS is not to conduct agriculture experiments but to provide security of employment and income both on short- and long-terms to the rural unemployed poor,” says the Prayas study.
