NREGA Update May 2007

Productive assets creation under NREGA up to May 2, 2007

According to data from the Union ministry of rural development, under NREGA, 7,69,476 productive assets (both completed and ongoing) have been created up to May 2007. Analysis of the works undertaken shows that digging of new ponds, check dams and tanks accounts for 33 per cent of the total works. Rural connectivity works follow water conservation in priority. Land development, which was introduced in 2007, accounts for 11 per cent of the total works (80,005).

The amendment to Schedule I of the NREGA this year has further expanded the scope of works, which can now be taken up in private land owned by beneficiaries. The amendment to Schedule II has permitted starting of the new work with 10 workers, relaxing the earlier limit of 50. However, the larger focus of the programme remains on water conservation and harvesting.
