Desperate for rains

Mumbai municipality to induce rains; activists call it a sham

torrential rains pounded Mumbai in the last week of June, but failed to help the city tide over the severe water shortage. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is now making frantic efforts to ease the crisis. On July 15, its standing committee decided to induce artificial rains through cloud seeding.

Traditionally, water was seen as a responsibility of citizens and the community collectively took the responsibility of not only building but also of maintaining the water bodies. Since independence, the government has taken control over the water-bodies and water supply.

About Delhi’s water

The quality of ground water is alkaline with pH ranging from 7.1 to 9.2, chloride content ranges between 21 and 1380 ppm. South of Delhi average chloride content is 250 ppm while in Najafgarh area it is around 1000 ppm rendering the water saline covering the area of 32 km. Sq. and marginally saline over the area of 129 sq km.

Where is the lake?

The Bellandur Lake is in the news nowadays because the Lake which once acted as a major source of water to the city of Bangalore, Karnataka has now been converted to a sewage drain completely. The dumping started in the late 90’s when the people of the region started depending on river Cauvery for their water requirements.
