Environment is not impeding growth’: CSE responds to industry leaders’ open letter

New Delhi, October 13, 2011: Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has expressed its strong disagreement with some of the contents of an ‘open letter to leaders’, written recently by India’s top industrialists. In a response to the open letter, CSE’s director general Sunita Narain has refuted the industry leaders’ contention that environmental clearances are delaying projects and hampering growth.

EIA analysis of a 4,000 MW thermal power plant (Gujarat)

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) analysed the EIA report of an upcoming thermal power plant of 4,000 megawatt (MW) in Jamnagar district of Gujarat.Mahesh Parmar of Paryavaran Mitra approached CSE to carry out a technical review of this EIA for the public hearing of the project on September 20, 2011.

EIA analysis of MSP Sponge Iron

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) analysed the EIA report of the proposed expansion of a ferro alloy plant and captive thermal power plant. The plant belongs to MSP sponge Iron Limited with capacity of 63,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of silico manganese  and 92,475 TPA of Ferro manganese proposed to come up in village Manuwapali of Riagarh district in Chhattisgarh. Raghubeer Pradhan of Ekta Parishad approached CSE to carry out a technical review of this EIA for the public hearing of the project on December 16, 2011.

Ramesh pays the price

Ramesh Agrawal is not a hardcore criminal but is paying the price of bringing a company's wrong doings to light. Ramesh along with Harihar Patel was arrested on May 28, 2011 as a result of a case filed by Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL).

Currently, there are 333 sponge iron factories across the country, and many more are in the pipeline. Railways’ steel wheel project hits environment roadblock
The Union environment ministry has deferred clearance to the proposed cast steel wheel project of the Indian Railways at Saran district of Bihar, and has sought a slew of clarifications before a reconsideration. The Railways have proposed to set up a rail cast wheel plant at a cost of Rs 1417.23 crore at Bela village of Saran district in Bihar.
