Green buildings are adroit in water and waste management
RBI bags certificates for its energy efficient buildings
After Pune, which is reaping the benefits of an eco-housing scheme launched last year, Mumbai now can do the same. The decks stand cleared for the launch of an eco-housing scheme in Mumbai, which offers financial incentives to both builders and consumers.
Prepared by Pune-based Science and Technology Park and recently adopted by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (mcgm), the scheme will certify green residential complexes, both new constructions and retrofitted buildings.
In 2010 CSE undertook a water audit for its office building, essentially aimed at further improving water efficiency and conserving every drop of water wherever possible.
Builders in Mumbai have sensed an opportunity to obtain permission for more construction area. The state government is now considering allowing higher floor space index for environment-friendly green buildings and is also considering other incentives to prompt more developers to undertake construction of such green buildings, said Valsa R Nair Singh, Secretary (Environment), Government of Maharashtra.
Do you know lighting accounts for almost 20 per cent of the monthly electricity bill in many households? Energy saving can make a considerable difference to our household budget.
What is LED?
LEDs have been around for over 50 years in colours red, orange, yellow, blue, green and then sheer white.
What is it and why it helps?
A Compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) is an energy efficient alternative and are much more efficient than incandescent bulbs. A CFL uses only one-fifth as much electricity as an incandescent lamp to provide the same level of illumination. A 15 W and 20 W CFL can replace a 60 W and 100 W incandescent bulbs respectively.
The Energy Audit is conducted on December 2010 for both buildings, and it is estimated that the total use of energy-mix in the buildings is optimally contributed to overall energy consumption demand. The building AAGC and Main CSE building has 98.39 kWh and 89.30 kWh sanctioned load from the grid supply respectively. The annual electricity bills for buildings, diesel and solar energy generation data collectively finds that Main CSE building’s (77%) share in total energy consumption was more than three times that of AAGC (22%) building (see Graph 01).
The Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) was launched by Ministry of Power, Government of India in May 2007, as a first step towards promoting energy efficiency in the building sector.
