About the Training
With a growing population and changing climate, the planet earth faces a number of threats. Global Risk Report 2019, prepared by the World Economic Forum, places water crisis, bio- diversity loss and ecosystem collapse, extreme weather events, natural and man-made disasters, and failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation, in the high-risk and high-likelihood quadrant.

Climate risks are more pronounced in the developing nations. Indian cities are already facing a pinch when it comes to resources. There is high water stress, pollution, inadequate and inefficient infrastructure, and heavy reliance on fossil-fuel based energy. For instance, 80 per cent of the population faces high to extreme water stress, i.e. difficulty level to access safe water. Only 78 per cent of the sewage that is generated is treated in the country, according to CPCB.

This leaves a strong need to switch to smart practices at a campus or neighbourhood level that enable adaptation to changing climate and curb the soaring resource burden. Government of India is also working towards this aim. For instance, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) mandated the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to green 100 General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Colonies nationwide. This includes installation of rainwater harvesting system and switching to other sustainable infrastructure.

Not only government institutions, but, universities, residential colonies, etc. are actively taking initiatives to green their campuses and neighbourhoods. Along the same line, CSE’s Green Campus Initiative has been enabling regulators, architects, engineers, planners, academia and civil society to shape efficient use of water-energy-land, minimise wastage, improve liveability and promote a healthy lifestyle in their respective campuses.

AAETI School of Water and Waste and Sustainable Buildings and Habitat Programme offer this certificate course to introduce techniques to green a campus. Course objectives are:

  • Develop baseline for monitoring and effective strategy to regulate environmental performance buildings and infrastructure of a campus to set priorities
  • Enhance skills to design and implement (including O&M)
    • Water Sensitive campuses - rainwater harvesting and decentralised wastewater treatment systems including reuse.
    • Resource efficiency (water-energy interface) and life cycle based cost benefit analysis aimed at building low impact green campuses.
  • Understanding land utilisation, circularity and liveability in campuses - microclimate enhancement, air-quality management, etc.

Field Visit
Field visit to Tijara fort: Understanding the traditional wisdom on sustainable buildings

Training Methodology
Classroom lectures, field visits, presentations, case studies, group exercises, assignments and discussions

AAETI is an ECBC compliant, sustainable, state of the art green campus. It has utilised various cost-effective passive techniques such as decentralised system for waste water treatment, water sensitive design, renewable energy, solid waste management, etc. Participants inhabiting the campus and interacting with the green features enables them to understand how all 5 natural elements come together in a campus. This acts as a learning tool for the participants and enables them for building operations, resource management and consequently reducing utility bills.
