Dear friends and colleagues,

These are unprecedented times and desperate times, and countries across the world are taking desperate measures to lock down economies and livelihoods. We are all in lock-down and we know this is the only option for countries like India where we do not have the wherewithal to treat millions; we have to prevent and we have to contain the transmission of the virus. But what is also clear is that the poor, self-employed, migrant workers and farmers are badly hit by the lock-down. In these times, it is they who require our attention.

But I am writing to tell you that we are on the job -- we are working -- as I am sure you are as well. We are all extremely concerned by what is happening in our world; we are concerned about the fact that this pandemic is as much about the dystopian relationship with nature, as it is about our ability to ensure good health to all.

This pandemic brings back the challenge of our interconnected world, because if any village, any city, any region or country, remains infected, the virus will continue to grow. It, therefore, also speaks of the need for global cooperation and most importantly, of the need to ensure access to all.

For instance, today we are talking about washing of hands to prevent the disease from spreading, but that means that everybody must have access to clean water for drinking and for washing hands. We cannot take this for granted. We have to work to achieve this. I am giving below a link to what we have published on the issue of water and COVID-19. Please do read it and share it.

Our 'normal' work continues, but in these times we have also decided on a proactive strategy on COVID-19: Our first effort is to bring scientifically rigorous and accurate news on the developments that are taking place. Given the rampant misinformation on the virus and its treatment, this is critical.

Our second effort is to ensure that we can bring news from the ground on what is happening in the lives of the poor across the developing world.

Our third effort is to highlight what governments are doing to reach food, services and other benefits to the poorest. What works, and what needs to be done. We are bringing you stories of despair, but also of hope.

We believe, our post-COVID-19 world is going to be different. But it is in our hands to make sure it is better.

Given the urgency and the fact that we need to inform you about these developments as they happen, we will send our newsletter to you every week. I hope you will continue to read us.

Please do 'subscribe' to the newsletter so that it does not go into your spam folder. We need you to read us; to give us support and encouragement.

Please stay safe. Please stay well.

Warm regards
Sunita Narain
