March 16 -March 22, 2021
Dear readers,

Climate change has led to the emission of ozone-depleting gases from oceans, depletion of agrarian migrant livelihoods in Ghana, and acceleration of sea-level rise in major cities. It has also affected food security in Lesotho and altered Kashmir’s flowering season. The levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) are on a staggering rise — 2021 is expected to be the first year on record that sees CO2 levels of more than 50 percent above pre-industrial levels.

Elsewhere, a study finds that conserving nature may yield a greater economic well-being than by carrying out activities like agriculture, and a UN report states that the Asia-Pacific region may achieve just 10% targets of sustainable development goals. Cruise tourism is on the decline as its detrimental impacts become widely known. Japan is building a number of projects to reach its net zero goal.

On the ground in India, MGNREGA is accelerating rural development by creating smart villages including the construction of check dams, water storage structures, and promoting changes in crop patterns. This video focuses on a case study in Bundelkhand.
