Climate Weekly
A weekly digest on impacts, politics and science of the climate emergency; from the Global South perspective. Access our extensive coverage on climate. You can find this newsletter in the web here.
April 27 – May 4, 2021
Dear readers,

This week, we examine the concept of ‘biocapacity’, i.e., the ability of an ecosystem to regenerate the resources that people use. 72 per cent of the world’s population were unable to sustainably obtain necessary ecological resources and could not purchase them from other countries in 2017, according to a new study. These people lived in countries with low biocapacity and below average incomes.

Forests and farm fires are posing threats to parts of India, including Delhi and Mizoram. This is affecting air quality and causing loss of forested areas.

Meanwhile sea level rise continues to rise, threatening coastal areas with major flooding – which may become worse due to a phenomenon called the lunar nodal cycle.

Global responses to climate change by the world’s major economies have been analysed in our new video that discusses the recent Leaders Summit for climate action, hosted by the United States.

The future of energy demand is analysed in our video discussing the International Energy Agency’s new report, which explores whether the rebound in activity in the second year of COVID-19 risks pushing carbon dioxide emissions to a new high.

In the finance sector, we discuss the need for the Indian government to introduce guidelines to standardise climate-related disclosures in all financial statements and push private companies to manage their exposure to climate risks in their portfolios and operation.

To make sense of these climate trends, register now for our online training An Introduction to Climate Change: Science, Politics, and Impacts. You can simultaneously purchase our new book Climate Change: Science and Politics, which is available here on the CSE Store.
