Dear readers,

Temperatures in the United Kingdom crossed 40 C last week, and climate change could increase the frequency of such extreme temperatures if no action is taken to control greenhouse gas emissions.

Many parts of the continent including Spain, Greece and France experienced wildfires. This video explains why rising temperatures leading to forest fires in Europe.

Heavy rain triggered 10,000 landslides in Maharashtra this month. The Telangana Chief Minister said cloudbursts may be a 'foreign conspiracy' during his visit to flood-hid Bhadrachalam, but Down to Earth explains the real science of cloudbursts here.

We now also need to keep an account of losses and damages due to these disasters, says Sunita Narain.

We take a look at why a large volume of water is evaporating from Indian lakes and reservoirs.

Elsewhere, a report found that the emissions caused by the US has inflicted severe losses on poorer countries through heatwaves, crop failures and other environmental consequences.

The issues prioritised by developing countries must be placed front and center with loud voices at COP 27 in Egypt this year.
