Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

Hydrogen is one of the current buzzwords in energy. An alarming report by the Corporate Europe Observatory caught our attention recently, and Rohini Krishnamurthy of DTE did a deep-dive on it. Green hydrogen is often called the "holy grail" of the energy transition, but it is far from perfect, she says. What is less discussed is that it could lead to human rights issues. And yet, nations have been betting big. She explains further in this video.

Elsewhere, experts have said that global warming, weak western disturbances and a strong subtropical jet stream could have caused the unseasonal rains and hailstorms that flattened crops in India.

A new study finds that Indian heat action plans do not take humidity, hot nights and duration of continuous heat into consideration, and are poor at identifying and targeting vulnerable groups.

In more positive news, this week the UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling the world’s highest court to opine on state responsibilities towards climate protection.

Recently, CSE-DTE released the annual State of India’s Environment report for 2023 – it covers a wide gamut of topics like climate change, agriculture and industry to water, plastics, forests and biodiversity.

CSE’s Climate Change programme also invites you to watch our online discussion on April 19th. CSE’s Director-General Sunita Narain joins other global experts to deliberate on the following question: why should developed nations be allowed to use natural gas unhindered, while the developing world gets called out for using coal – when both the fossil fuels contribute to global warming?
