Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

The world’s largest fossil fuel-producing countries have neither made a commitment to end oil and gas production nor have they set a global target for renewable energy, according to a new report from Climate Action Tracker (CAT). DTE’s Rohini Krishnamurthy writes about the report, which was released at the Bonn Conference this week. The CAT report urges developed countries to set a date for ending oil and gas production. Many of these countries are keen to invest in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). CCS – which involves capturing CO2 emissions from industrial processes and power plant operations instead of emitting them into the atmosphere - faces significant technological, economic, and institutional barriers.

We are at the end of the first week of the Bonn climate conference. DTE’s Akshit Sangomla is reporting live that the meetings have started on a note of discord between developed and developing countries on many agenda items. Sharing an equal burden of mitigation is one of the issues that developing countries are opposed to.

Rohini Krishnamurthy also reports on a study which says that India should receive $57 trillion in compensation through 2050 from the Global North for climate damages.

And finally, the El Nino phenomenon is here, and could cause more damage depending on its strength this winter; particularly it could cause more warming.
