Dear readers,

Welcome to the Climate Weekly newsletter by the Centre for Science and Environment’s Climate Change programme and Down to Earth.

This week, Raju Sajwan of DTE discusses the current state of the Kharif season in India, highlighting the impact of rainfall irregularities on agricultural activities. Despite floods in parts of northern India, 38% of all the districts in India received below-normal rainfall, resulting in drought-like conditions in 16% of them. As a consequence, the sowing of Kharif crops has not occurred in 2 million hectares compared to last year. The erratic weather has also led to fluctuations in sowing patterns for major crops like paddy and pulses.

Two reports emphasize Africa's climate challenges this week. First, an Oxford study warns of extreme temperature surges if climate targets are exceeded, increasing cooling demand in vulnerable countries. Raising investments for meeting increased energy demand for cooling will be a key challenge for many African countries, it adds. Secondly, the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) construction raises concerns about disturbing ecosystems and worsening the global climate crisis.

Sand and dust storms have increased dramatically in frequency and severity in recent years and pose challenges to the achievement of sustainable development goals.
