Energy storage has a vital role to play in the green transition of BIMSTEC countries
Storage technologies are essential if we are to replace fossil fuel-based power generation with 100% renewable energy sources (RES). Owing to the intermittent nature of RES, various kinds of long-term energy storage options are being explored. Lithium-ion batteries are currently the predominant storage technology solution for grid integration of RES but there are a number of other novel solutions also being piloted across the globe.

G7 sets renewables target, no timeline for fossil fuel phase out
The Group of Seven (G7) Countries’ Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment was held in Sapporo, Japan last month, where they committed to collectively increasing offshore wind capacity by 150 gigawatts (GW) and adding solar capacity of over 1 terawatt (TW).It is worth noting that the G7’s total solar capacity in 2022was 319.7 GW, which represents just over 30 per cent of the total world solar capacity. With the G7’s present commitment, this capacity is expected to grow to about 1.3 TW, which is about four times the current capacity.
