What are vector-borne diseases?


Vector-borne diseases are infections transmitted by the bite of infected arthropod species, such as mosquitoes, ticks, etc


Who is responsible for controlling vector-borne diseases in India?


Directorate of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) is the central nodal agency for the prevention and control of vector borne diseases i.e. Malaria, Dengue, Lymphatic Filariasis, Kala-azar, Japanese Encephalitis and Chikungunya in India. It is one of the Technical Departments of Directorate General of Health Services, Government of India.


What is dengue?

Dengue is a viral disease, transmitted by the infective bite of Aedes Aegypti mosquito. Humans develop the disease after 5-6 days of being bitten by an infective mosquito. It occurs in two forms: Dengue Fever and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever(DHF), which is a severe, flu-like illness that can cause death


What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral illness that is spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The disease resembles dengue fever, and is characterized by severe, sometimes persistent, joint pain (arthiritis), as well as fever and rash. It is rarely life-threatening.
