Dear Friend,

Capacity building is often undertaken as an activity. At CSE, we see our capacity-building work in water and sanitation as critical to developing a conceptual understanding of emerging issues and challenges, building on what is happening on the ground. Not merely on normative, technical applications.

Best capacity building is done on the job, not through trainings. We cannot influence the work culture of other organisations and the government. What we do at CSE is to raise critical issues in our training programs that invite trainees to develop skill sets to apply their learning to different contexts and to ever-changing technology solutions. To be able to identify the best solutions in their context. We use interactive webinars and online sessions during our trainings, to foster this larger understanding.

During the last three months, CSE undertook 11 capacity-building trainings in urban and rural water and wastewater management. These trainings were conducted under our JJM and NMCG partnerships. Our trainings are open to all.

In collaboration with the Department of Urban Development (DoUD) Uttar Pradesh, CSE organised a national workshop in Lucknow on FSSM enabling Bye-Laws for Desludging and the Economics of Desludging. As knowledge and learning and sharing event.

CSE participated in the IWA 2022 International meet in Copenhagen where we presented the work done by CSE in UP. We celebrated the November 19 World Toilet Day through a webinar conversation with Jack Sim of the World Toilet Organisation.

We are now working on a Water Sensitive Framework for Global South Cities. By contextualising the normative discourse emerging from the Planned and Infrastructure developed cities context of Australia and Europe to the Indian and global south context. Balancing the need for both grey and green infrastructure requirement with a justice and equity perspective that is missing in the discourse of the global north.

We look forward to strengthening our Urban Water capacity development work and learning content, with a reach out to ground-level experiences and research in the coming year.

Your suggestions and feedback are welcome at: sww-aaeti@cseindia.org

Best regards,
Depinder Singh Kapur
Director - Water Programme
