Exposure visit cum brief training on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and management of greywater and faecal sudge in rural areas of India

The Rural Water and Waste Management team of CSE organized a 5-day exposure visit cum brief training for the senior officials of Uganda, Tanzania and Nigeria in India, to help them understand the working of rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and management of greywater and faecal sludge at institutional and community level.

The officials were from the Department of Water and Environment, Uganda, Ministry of Health, Tanzania and Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria with whom CSE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the three ministries to undertake capacity building programmes for their selected officials. This exposure visit was part of the activity agreed under MOU. The visit followed a brief meeting with the three partner countries on the above mentioned areas at Dar Es Salam in July this year.

The highlights of exposure visit are as follows:

  • Meeting the officials of Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. Ministry of Jal Shakti  to discuss on the institutional, financial and awareness tools of Jal Jeevan Mission (rural water supply programme) and Swachh Bharat Mission (rural sanitation programme)
  • Visit successful implementation of rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge at the institutional and village level
  • Visit successful implementation of greywater management at village level
  • Understanding the vision of CSE on management of groundwater, grey-water and faecal sludge through institutional models
  • Visit working models of different toilet technologies
  • Interact with different stakeholders to understand the technologies for water and sanitation systems at individual, community and village level

The officials had an intense brainstorming session with the team to discuss the key takeeaways from the progrmme. Country wise challenges and solutions for water source sustainability and sanitation were discussed by the team members. Different activities were proposed by the partner countries to bring changes on the ground. CSE has been requested to handhold the partner countries to help them improve In the fields of groundwater management and sanitation in rural areas.
