Thirty-three years after the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was born in Rio de Janeiro, the COP summit returns to Brazil - this time to the Amazonian city of Belem. Coming on the heels of a disappointing outcome in Baku in 2024 and growing mistrust in the multilateral process, COP30 needs to help restore momentum for global climate action.

Dubbed the 'Implementation COP', this year’s summit is expected to focus on several defining themes: Operationalising the climate finance goal agreed to in Baku, the Global Goal on Adaptsation, a decisive outcome on the just transition agenda, and the ambition gap in countries' NDCs.
