Dear Friend,

Globally cities are reporting increasing incidences of flooding that is attributed to climate change. Several studies also point out that water cycle in cities is broken due to hap hazard urbanisation with encroachment over water bodies and watershed resulting reduced adaptive capacities within urban landscapes.

CSE School of Water and Waste (SWW) research undertaken in select cities – namely in states of Odisha, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh in India has documented missed potential of storm water harvesting in open spaces and parks within built environment that will go long way in managing floods as well as in-situ water augmentation including recharge of groundwater.

Cities should develop adaptive, multi-functional infrastructure reinforcing water sensitive behaviours through urban design and planning. Need is to build capacities of urban local bodies and development authorities to understand urgency in this regard. In this direction CSE has recently partnered with National Mission Clean Ganga and launched a 3-year duration capacity building and action research initiative targeting state and municipal functionaries to push water sensitive design into city planning – aimed at developing model projects that can act as learning centres cum light house for Ganga basin cities.

In this endeavour, we are pleased to put forward this bi-monthly newsletter exhibiting, updates, publications, training, events and more. We look forward to hearing impact stories of change from all our alumni, partners and readers.

Your suggestions and feedback are welcome. at: sww-aaeti@cseindia.org

Best regards,
Suresh Kumar Rohilla
Senior Director & Academic Director
