Kolkata registered a record 34,000 cars in 2022, experts flag pollution fears
KOLKATA: With as many as 34,863 new vehicles registered in 2022, last year saw the highest-ever vehicular growth in Kolkata. The boom, according to experts, is both good and bad: while it brought in record revenue earnings, the fact that the growth was driven mostly by private vehicles, mostly run on fossil fuel, means the city is set to get more congested and polluted. Track the pollution level in your city Before this, the public vehicles department (PVD) saw the most registrations in 2019, with a count of 33,830. The rise in demand for private vehicles started during the pandemic, out of a fear of catching the virus. But the sharp fall in the number of public transport vehicles kept the momentum going. Only 12 buses were registered in 2022. Transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty said he was happy with the growth. "Online services have significantly eased the processes. But we are overburdened with an older fleet. We are developing scientific scrapping facilities, which will make room for newer, non-polluting EVs," he added. But transport expert Anumita Roychowdhury, executive director, Centre for Science and Environment, saw the other side too. The increase in cars would contribute to traffic congestion, like in Delhi and Bengaluru, she feared.
