First severe smog hits Delhi, nation’s capital could experience longest season since 2017: report
This year could be the worst smog episode for Delhi and its neighboring regions, warns the green think tank Center for Science and Environment (CSE). Smog is expected to last another two days in Delhi-NCR areas, according to the Green Think Tank. This means that the first episode of severe smog in Delhi could be the longest in four years. According to Anumita Roychowdhury, Executive Director, Research and Advocacy at CSE, the first smog episode of the season was triggered by the combined effect of inclement weather, stubble burning and firecrackers. The maximum contribution of smoke to Delhi’s particulate level was recorded. on November 7 when it reached 48%. The green think tank says this year’s first smog episode has already lasted six days, matching that of 2018 and 2020. The average smog intensity this year so far is 329 micrograms per cubic meter per day. This figure is 7% lower than the 2020 smog figure and 3% lower than the 2019 smog figure. However, it is more intense than the 2018 smog figure by about 9%. The analysis was carried out on the basis of real-time data available from the air quality monitoring stations currently operating in Delhi-NCR and the greater Indo-Gangetic plain.
