Guwahati has one of world’s highest black carbon pollution levels

The Delhi-based Centre of Science and Environment (CSE) had recently warned that the problem of air pollution is growing steadily in Assam and also in other northeastern states, posing a threat to the concept of pristine blue skies and clean air in this region. In the National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP), five ‘non-attainment’ cities have been identified in Assam, namely, Guwahati, Nagaon, Silchar, Sivasagar, and Nalbari. The pollutant levels in these cities have exceeded the prescribed air quality standards. Accordingly, the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) has been initiated to develop action plans to bring down the fine particulate matter (like PM10 and PM2.5) by 20-30 per cent within a stipulated timeframe. An emission inventory study has been initiated for Guwahati, wherein the contribution of pollutants from different sectors like commercial, transportation, domestic and industrial sources will be estimated. The high level of air pollution resulting from massive motorisation, traffic congestion, and use of solid fuel are causing a public health crisis in the hilly terrains and valleys of the northeastern states. What is worse is that although the air quality has declined gradually, it has failed to draw public attention yet. But, in the winter, air pollution in Guwahati is as bad as in many cities in Uttar Pradesh. Pollution is high even in smaller cities too. Parthankar Choudhury, Professor of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar, said that over the years, the concentration of particulate matter in the ambient air is on the rise, which is alarming. “More research projects need to be carried out on the respiratory distress and other health ailments caused due to air pollution,” he added. In the present scenario, various construction works are going on in and around Guwahati, which may be responsible for the increase in concentrations of PM10. This increase, however, is temporary in nature because, after the completion of the construction works, e.g., a flyover, the vehicle flow will be smooth with less congestion which will eventually lead to lesser pollutant levels in the long run. Black carbon is just next to carbon dioxide in global warming potential and has an effect on global climate. Rajarshi Sharma, a research scholar of the Air & Noise Research Lab of IIT Guwahati (IIT-G) headed by Prof. Sharad Gokhale, studied emission levels of black carbon and found that fossil fuel burning (from transportation, industries, kerosene lamps for lighting in residential use) is responsible for about 60 per cent of black carbon emission, while biomass burning (from firewood for residential use, cropland burning, forest fires, slash burning) contribute to about 40 per cent. The total emission of black carbon is about 19.38 Gg (Gigagram) during 2018-19, of which 3.38 Gg is from Kamrup Metropolitan district only, which is also the highest black carbon emitting district. The other reason which is affecting Guwahati is the unplanned and open burning of solid waste disposal right in the city itself. People do not realise the amount of black carbon and toxic pollutants which are emitted from burning waste disposal. Guwahati has one of the highest black carbon pollution levels in the world which is alarming, said an officer of the state government. Ardhendu Shekhar Chaudhury, another researcher at IIT-G, found in a study near urban roadways of Guwahati that the average black carbon level in winter season at the breathing level is about 32 micrograms per cubic meter. Prof Gokhale said that the air pollution scenario in Assam is not as grave as Delhi today but is certainly alarming as the levels of fine particles are rising. There is a need for public awareness of its harmful health effects and practically adaptable solutions to reduce the particle levels and minimise the damage to human health as well as the climate of the region.

Delhi’s AQI to Cross 300 Today? Air Quality Remains ‘Poor’ Before Diwali; Doctors Foresee Rise in Lung Diseases

Delhi, which saw clean air during the preceding monsoon months this year, recorded poor air quality on Friday ahead of Diwali with the air quality index (AQI) falling to 262. With the approaching winter, the air quality is further expected to dwindle as the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has predicted that the AQI of the national capital region may exceed 300-mark on Saturday. ALSO READ | Delhi Air is ‘Poor’, ‘Severe’: As People Talk in ‘AQI Terms’, News18 Explains All About Pollution Tracker Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai also said that experts are of the view that pollution levels may increase in Delhi after Diwali if the wind direction changes. “The Delhi government is on alert. We are strictly implementing all the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday reviewed the implementation of the 15-point action plan to curb air pollution in winter,” Rai said. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered good, 51 and 100 satisfactory, 101 and 200 moderate, 201 and 300 poor, 301 and 400 very poor, and 401 and 500 severe. Lowest Pollution During July-Sept Delhi’s PM2.5 pollution average for the July-August-September quarter this year stood at 37 microgram per cubic metre, only marginally higher than the five-year low of 36 microgram per cubic metre recorded during 2020, according to Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). Pollution levels in the July-August-September quarter were preceded by one of the most polluted summers this year, unlike in 2020 when the trimester followed the cleanest ever summer (March-May) due to extraordinary conditions created because of hard pandemic lockdowns, the think tank said. Delhi to Launch ‘Red Light on Gaadi off’ Campaign In view of the rising pollution in the national capital, the Delhi government will launch the “Red Light on Gaadi off” campaign again to curb vehicular pollution from October 28, Environment Minister Gopal Rai said. Rai said experts are of the view that pollution levels may increase in Delhi after Diwali if the wind direction changes. Doctors Anticipate Rising Lung Cancer Cases With the air quality expected to remain below safe notches, experts anticipate an increase in cases of lung cancer. “Over time, breathing in small particles released into the air can lead to cancer. Small particles can get trapped in the lungs. A buildup of these particles can cause damage to the cells of the lungs, leading to inflammation. These changes may cause the cells of the lungs to grow uncontrollably,” Dr Avi Kumar, Senior Consultant, Pulmonology at Delhi’s Fortis Escorts Heart Institute told India Today. SC Rejects Hearing On Cracker Ban The Supreme Court has turned down a petition by BJP MP Manoj Tiwari seeking urgent hearing of a plea challenging the blanket ban on firecrackers in Delhi. “Let people breathe clean air… spend your money on sweets,” the apex court said. The Delhi high court also refused to entertain a petition challenging Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s blanket ban on sale and use of firecrackers citing the pendency of issues related to firecrackers before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, police have already seized over 13,700 kg of firecrackers and registered 75 cases in this connection in October, official data showed on Thursday. The data comprises records from October 1 to 19. The police seized 13,767.719 kg firecrackers for storage or sale and registered 75 cases in this connection.

Delhi Air quality continues to be 'poor', AQI stands at 262

The capital’s air quality has worsened during winters due to seasonal and atmospheric factors. Burning of crop stubble in surrounding Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan in the winters also increases concentration of pollutants. The air quality in the National Capital Region worsened on Friday and continued to be under the ‘poor’ category on Saturday as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR)-India. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 262 on Saturday morning. The maximum temperature recorded on Friday was 33.5 degrees Celsius. The air quality in Delhi-NCR is likely to worsen to "very poor" by Saturday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said on Friday. The capital’s air quality has worsened during winters due to seasonal and atmospheric factors. Burning of crop stubble in surrounding Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan in the winters also increases concentration of pollutants. Significant decline in air pollution compared to pre-COVID time However, The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on Thursday said that this winter, Delhi has seen a significant decline of 20 per cent in air pollution, compared to the pre-Covid era. CSE states that the onset of winter was much cleaner this year due to the rainfall in September and October. However, the intensity of the early winter pollution will depend a lot on the trend in the crop fires along with the impact of Diwali. Arvind Kejriwal-led measures to combat air pollution The Arvind Kejriwal-led government recently re-imposed a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers till January 1. Firecrackers have been banned in Delhi since the past two years. The Delhi government has also imposed a fine of Rs 200 for bursting firecrackers along with six months in jail. Delhi's air quality remains under ‘poor’ category on Saturday; AQI at 262

The air quality of Delhi on Saturday remained under the ‘poor’ category as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR)-India. The Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 262 on Saturday morning. With the Diwali festival around, the city's air quality has continued to deteriorate. Every year, Delhi's pollution level spikes up from October and lasts till the end of fall due to various reasons such as the burning of stubble, smog, etc. Under the campaign, first launched on October 16, 2020, to cut down vehicular pollution in the national capital, drivers are encouraged to switch off their vehicles while waiting for the traffic light to turn green. Data from the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) shows that if people switch off engines at traffic signals, pollution can be cut down by 13-20%. According to government estimates, the transport sector accounts for 28% of the PM2.5 emissions in Delhi. The vehicular contribution also makes up 80% of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in Delhi's air. Separately, in an analysis by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Delhi's PM2.5 pollution during July-September remained lowest in 5 years.
