June 26, 2018

The Food Safety and Toxins Team at the Centre for Science and Environment organized a three-day international workshop to address the implementation of National Action Plans (NAPs) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) for developing countries of Asia and Africa. The workshop was held at the Anil Agarwal Environment Training Institute (AAETI) in Tijara during January 22−24, 2018.

The workshop brought together about fifty regional and national experts from Africa, Asia and Indian states. AMR focal points at Ministries of Health and Agriculture participated from ten African countries namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Namibia, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana and five Asian countries namely Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal. There was also significant representation from 7 key Indian states across departments of Health, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Environments.  Additionally, there was participation from inter-governmental organisations (Asian and African representations), key stakeholders at the Centre including, civil society organisations as well as the scientific community from both human and veterinary sector.

The workshop was aimed at enabling the development of a deeper understanding of how countries and states can successfully implement NAPs at country and state level respectively. The workshop also facilitated cross learning across developing countries and exchange of views among experts on challenges, ground realities, on-going efforts associated with implementation of NAPs.

This was the first international workshop held at the AAETI complex and was successful in meeting its objective. Deliberations at the workshop once again highlighted the need for addressing the animal and environmental aspects of AMR in country and state level action Plans.
