Integrated Laboratory Training on Faecal Sludge Analysis Experiments, Standards and Reuse Readiness for FSM Practitioners

About the training 

The management of sanitation systems has been in vogue, particularly in low and middle-income countries like India. However, Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) is a rapidly evolving field globally, with ongoing advancements in research and methodologies. As a result, developing skills for testing the quality of faecal sludge and treated wastewater has become a key priority. This course highlights both basic and recent advancements in laboratory analysis of the physico-chemical and biological parameters of faecal sludge, treated water and dried faecal sludge (biosolids). It is part of a collaboration between the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and the Gates Foundation on FSM in India. Experts and lab scientists from CSE’s Environment Monitoring Laboratory (EML) will lead the sessions, providing hands-on training in lab analysis using cutting-edge equipment and techniques. With a focus on practical learning, experiments in the laboratory will be conducted; participants will, gain valuable skills while working with the top-tier equipment and protocols. The training will take place at CSE’s residential campus in Nimli, near Alwar, Rajasthan.

  • Sample collection, storage and transportation
  • Safety measures to be taken during handling of faecal sludge and biosolids
  • Physio-chemical analysis of faecal sludge and biosolids
  • Biological analysis of faecal sludge and biosolids
  • Analytical skill on the quality parameters of faecal sludge and biosolids
  • Laboratory skills on the sophisticated instruments
  • Analytical equipment calibration and methodology validation.
  • Good laboratory practices 

Methodology:

Highly interactive hands-on training:

  • Interactive input presentations
  • Analysis of physico-chemical parameters
  • Microbial (Faecal coliform, coli and Salmonella) analysis by CFU/MPN methods
  • Helminth eggs enumeration in biosolids by AmBic/ZnSO4 method
  • Analytical equipment calibration (pH meter, Micropipette, Glassware’s, Centrifuge, Balance, ICP-OES etc.) and methodology validation
  • Heavy metal analysis of biosoilds using ICP-OES
  • Quality analysis of biosolids using CHNS analyzer (Carbon: Nitrogen ratio)
  • NPK analysis of biosolids (CHN analyser and ICP-OES)
  • Analysis of physico-chemical parameters such as pH. Total solids, BOD, COD, TKN, Ammoniacal nitrogen, and Total phosphates
  • Individual and Group Assignments

Course fee and facilities

Eligible candidates will be provided with scholarship for this training by CSE. This support will also cover the cost of stay, including all meals.

Transportation
  • Participants shall only be provided ground transport for Delhi to AAETI (training venue) and back to Delhi.
  • Participants need to bear the cost of their travel to reach Delhi and back to their hometown.
