As India races ahead on its development journey, land has become one of the most sought after and contentious resources. Land acquisition for projects, displacement of people who have lived on the acquired land, their rehabilitation and resettlement – these are issues that governments are constantly forced to grapple with. To reduce conflicts and build trust, communities must be given clear information about project impacts and fair compensation for their land. This is where Social Impact Assessment (SIA) becomes a game-changer.
SIA is more than a checklist -- it is a process of analysing, monitoring and managing the social and cultural consequences of projects. It ensures that decision-makers, regulators and stakeholders understand the social and economic footprints of development. For it to work, active involvement of all stakeholders is essential. Equally critical is a strong grasp of the RFCTLARR Act, 2013 and its provisions for rehabilitation and resettlement.
To strengthen capacities in this field, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is conducting a four-day residential training programme. The course will take participants through the complete SIA and R&R process, and will build a cadre of professionals equipped to handle SIA reporting and land acquisition with skill, sensitivity and fairness.
