Solid Waste Management in India's Northeast

Date: Saturday, May 28, 2022 10 AM-12 Noon
Platform: Zoom
Language: English

India’s northeast is getting swamped by a mammoth mountain of solid waste. The region generates more than 3,100 metric tonne of waste every day, of which nearly 85 per cent is dumped on land or in waterbodies without processing and treatment. Every city in the region is struggling to manage the solid waste it is generating.

What must the region, its municipalities, and its people do to salvage the situation? Are landfills the answer? How can the plastic waste be managed? What are the actions that are already being taken, and what have been their impacts?

We invite journalists from the northeast to join our Second Northeast Narratives online media briefing workshop to discuss and understand the issue.

Solid waste management experts from Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), who have been studying and analysing the issue in select cities of the northeast, will give overviews on the magnitude of the problem, the challenges the region faces, and the possible solutions.

Representatives from some key municipal authorities from the region are also being invited to speak at the workshop: they would be expected to throw light on efforts and actions being undertaken by the governments.

The workshop will also host a session by editors and data sourcing and environmental resources experts from CSE and Down To Earth, who would offer inputs and tips on gathering information and writing on the subject.

Please note: This workshop is open only to practising journalists working in and based in northeast. It is a free workshop, but since seats are limited, we advise those who are interested to register early
