Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has been fostering the Global Forum of Cities for Circular Economy (GFCCE) since 2022, serving as a collaborative platform for African governments. Its mission is to establish a circular solid waste management ecosystem through rigorous evidence-based learning, research, capacity building and advocacy efforts. GFCCE now consists of 18 member states from Africa, and its efforts focus on setting an agenda aimed at tackling the pressing challenges in the continent’s solid waste landscape.
The projection for urban solid waste generation in Sub-Saharan Africa indicates a potential increase of approximately 300 per cent, from 174 million tonne (MT) in 2016 to 522 MT by the year 2050. Approximately, 70 per cent of the present waste leaks into the environment due to improper management, limited capacity and resources.
The Republic of Kenya, being a member state of the GFCCE right from its beginning, has shown a lot of intent to reform existing policies, systems and practices. To advance the agenda of circularity in Kenya, the Nairobi City County Government, NEMA and CSE will co-host a tailor-made capacity building programme for local government officials of Nairobi City County (NCC) and other stakeholders from October 7 to 9, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya.
In addition to addressing the existing learning needs, the Solid Waste Information Management System (SWIMS), as a tool for baseline data and concurrent monitoring, has been identified as one of the priority by the NCC. SWIMS is designed to assist NCC and Kenya in creating a national data inventory, thereby facilitating informed planning and policy formulation. Apart from key functionaries in NCC, the event will also be joined by senior officials from National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in the Republic of Kenya and the Indian High Commission in Nairobi.
