Rapid urbanisation is driving a sharp increase in the generation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, but sustainable management of this waste stream remains an uphill task. Systems of managing C&D waste are largely confined to a few major cities that have established mandates, policies and supporting infrastructure.
The Environment (C&D) Waste Management Rules, 2025 are set to transform the sector, having introduced an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework and redefined stakeholder roles and responsibilities. The Rules increase accountability of both the generators and the urban local bodies, and make the use of recycled C&D products mandatory for large projects, pushing the sector towards greater resource circularity.
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites applications for a short-term residential training course designed to demystify the 2025 Rules, and equip its trainees with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate compliance and develop effective C&D waste management ecosystems. The course would be particularly useful for officials of urban local bodies, pollution control boards and construction companies, as well as for architects, engineers, planners, researchers and anyone interested in sustainable built environment.
