Uttar Pradesh powers ahead in clean energy transition

  • Registers three-fold jump in installed capacity between 2019 and 2026; leader in solar rooftop installation
  • Centre for Science and Environment and UPNEDA collaborate to conduct a discussion on regulations and compliance; CSE says policies and regulations exist – implementation is now the need of the hour

Lucknow, October 12, 2026: Uttar Pradesh (UP) has kept in step with the nation’s goals on clean renewable energy – its installed capacity stands at 9,583 megawatt (MW) today, up from 3,201.49 MW in 2019, almost a three-fold jump. Solar power dominates the mix at 6,701 MW. The state boasts of 7.29 lakh rooftop systems.

These numbers were in focus at a state-level workshop -- Powering Uttar Pradesh’s Clean Energy Future -- held here today. The workshop was jointly organised by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the New Delhi-based think tank, and the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA).

The workshop brought together more than 100 participants from government departments including UPNEDA, UPPCL and other obligated entities, solar power generators, open access and captive power consumers from across the state and sector experts from different states. The agenda was to discuss renewable energy regulations and compliance in Uttar Pradesh.

The discussions focused on Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO), the RPO Portal, Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO), Energy Storage Obligation (ESO) and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). Participants also discussed compliance challenges, monitoring and reporting mechanisms, renewable energy procurement and industry best practices.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravinder Singh, Director, UPNEDA said: ““Rising demand is driving the growth of renewable energy. Energy efficiency is equally important; its impact is large, but most of the time it is difficult to measure.”

Nivit K Yadav, Programme Director, Sustainable Industrialisation and Renewable Energy, CSE pointed out: “States already have the regulations and policies. What is lacking is implementation, and the focus must now shift from policy to action on the ground.”

The workshop also featured discussions on practical challenges faced by obligated entities and other stakeholders, highlighting the importance of stronger coordination, effective monitoring and knowledge-sharing to support the state’s clean energy transition.

Praising the state’s strides in this sector, Parth Kumar, Programme Manager, Sustainable Industrialisation, CSE said: “Uttar Pradesh has become one of the leaders in rooftop solar installations – with Lucknow leading from the front.”
