Background

As centralized solutions cannot be the whole sole problem solver for the urban sanitation, therefore small scale sewage treatment systems and local reuse is key to achieving citywide water and sanitation. Towards this an advisory under Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban on 'On-site and off-site sewage management practices' was issued by Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (hyperlink) in July 2020. Both centre / state governments and local bodies have included decentralized wastewater management as a key area of intervention to make cities water sensitive under ongoing national programmes (AMRUT 2.0, SBM 2.0, Namami Gange, Smart Cities).

CSE - School of Water and Waste (SW&W) aims to establish policy principles, innovative technologies, and implementation strategies for citywide water and sanitation management, which will lay the foundations for a water and waste-prudent society. CSE also assists Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India as a Centre of Excellence in the area of sustainable urban water management aimed at mainstreaming reforms and capacity building of state/city official and published - A Practitioner’s Guide on Water Sensitive Urban Design and Planning (WSUDP). The Centre also published 'Reinvent, Recycle, Reuse – Toolkit on Decentralised Wastewater Management and developed a web compendium 'MOUNT' an aggregator platform of various successfully implemented case studies on small scale nature based wastewater treatment and local reuse.

Aim of the training:

Build a cohort of practitioners and managers (both government and private) who will design and implement Decentralised Wastewater Treatment Systems (DWWTs).

Training Highlights:

  • Understand techno - economic feasibility of different nature based decentralized wastewater management.
  • Step by step designing and implementing decentralized wastewater treatment system (DWWTs) for local reuse including operations and management.
  • Develop understanding of enabling institutional, regulatory and policy frameworks. DWWM including stakeholder mapping and engagement.
  • Learn from real implementers and gain on-ground experience from successfully implemented BMPs.

Training Design

The training will follow a mix method Harvard Case Method approach involving lectures, in-class exercises, interactive discussions and audio-video. The participants will get an opportunity to plan and design Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System (DWWTs) as part of 'Do It Yourself' - group exercise.

Target Participants

Architects, planners, engineers, researchers and other water and sanitation professionals working with consultancies, design firms, PMU, non - government organizations, universities and research centres etc.
