India is world’s second-largest cement producer. With capacity set to expand by 160–170 million tonnes by 2028, the sector’s emissions trajectory carries major consequences for the country’s climate commitments. This report examines energy efficiency as the most immediate and cost-effective lever for decarbonising cement manufacturing in India. This report profiles nine key technologies and finds that their remaining adoption could reduce sectoral emissions by 0.0138–0.0185 tCO2/t cement from a baseline of 0.63 tCO2/t. These measures could also help the cement sector meet its near-term targets under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.
