Climate-responsive Urban Centres Mainstreaming adaptation and mitigation in urban development

India is urbanising at an unprecedented pace: by 2036, nearly 600 million people -- over 40 per cent of the population -- will call Indian cities their home. But this growth is colliding with a harsh new reality: cities like Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru are grappling with deadly heatwaves, urban flooding, groundwater depletion, and hazardous air quality. Indian cities are on the frontlines of climate risk;the expectation is high that they would also be at the forefront of climate response. 

While almost every Indian state and Union territory now has a climate action plan, most remain on paper, disconnected from ground-level urban planning, municipal budgets, and the lived realities of vulnerable communities who bear the brunt of climate impacts. Bridging this gap between policy and practice is now central to India's climate adaptation and net-zero commitments. 

Against this backdrop, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is offering a four-day intensive training programme on Climate-responsive Urban Centres.This programme is designed to equip India's urban decision-makers with the practical tools to close this gap, moving cities from planning on paper to implementation on the ground.
