Residential Training Programme:Decarbonising Cities

In the wake of India’s net-zero and doubling energy efficiency goals, urban areas require moving beyond isolated interventions. They need to adopt a comprehensive development approach that treats cities, buildings and construction materials as interconnected systems, as urban emissions and energy use are heavily shaped by decisions made at each of these levels

At the city scale, decarbonisation is closely tied to managing outdoor heat. This requires enhancing urban green and blue infrastructure, shading, microclimate, using reflective and permeable pavements, and integrating heat-sensitive urban planning into zoning and design codes. At the building scale, the focus shifts to thermally-efficient envelope design that minimizes cooling demand and addresses energy efficiency.

Exploring low-carbon cooling systems such as those with alternative energy, passive techniques, heat recovery mechanisms, low-GWP refrigerants, and smart controls, is becoming increasingly crucial. A circular approach to materials involving reuse and recycling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and adoption of green cement alternatives, directly addresses one of the largest sources of embodied emissions in the built environment.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is offering a four-day training programme designed to equip practitioners with the knowledge and practical tools to plan and implement low-carbon and energy-efficient development strategies. This includes an urban cooling framework that enables cities to adapt and plan intelligently using a whole-carbon approach. Such approaches have become imperative for cities in the wake of increasing climate vulnerabilities and achievement of India’s net-zero goal.
