Awaaz Foundation

The Awaaz Foundation was founded in 2006 by SumairaAbdulali, an environmental activist. It is based in Mumbai and works on environmental issues. Its main areas of work are noise pollution and sand mining campaigns. The Foundation had filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Bombay High Court seeking a ban on mining on the Konkan coast. SumairaAbdulali, President of the Foundation was assaulted by sand mining mafia at Mahad, prompting the Court to ban sand mining in the entire state. The Foundation also pushed for licensing of sand barges and for regulation of their movement to and from Mumbai.

The Foundation has also single handedly forced the government of Maharashtra to enforce rules on noise pollution and to declare silence zones in and around educational institutions, hospitals, courts and religious places. In response to a PIL filed by the Foundation, the Mumbai High Court ordered the state government to implement the Noise Pollution Rules, 2000, under the Environment Protection Act.
