Traditional Practices of re-using wastewater at Phalodi, Jodhpur

After the failure of a few earlier initiatives (such as drip irrigation due to storms etc) the community got together to think of practices that would re-think the utilization of water for horticulture. Earlier, tankers were hired for horticulture use at the monthly cost of Rs. 3000 approximately. Gravis came forward to assist and fund the households with the idea of re-use of wastewater. They provided fencing material and seeds for re-use of kitchen and bathing water to irrigate kitchen gardens around houses. A permanent underground pipe is laid from the house to these gardens where native fruits such as anar, goonda, lemon, ber etc are grown for household consumption.

The water used in the kitchen for washing utensils and cooking is connected to a pipe that transports water to the horticulture unit situated outside the house. A slab of stone is kept next to the trees where people can take bath and thereby the wastewater can directly pass to the plant. This is followed in many households now in the entire area due to the help of Gravis.
