A round table conference organised by the Environment Education Unit (EEU) of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) discussed the critically relevant viewpoint. Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE’s) Environment Education Unit (EEU) conducts two-day training programmes for teachers, educators, development workers and people interested in environment education.
Like forests, tigers, minerals and groundwater, schools too, will now be meticulously ‘mapped’ by government agencies. The purpose is to find out if there are enough good ones around to cater to thousands of aspiring toddlers (looking for nursery admissions, of course!). Focus, in this case, will be rivetted on our cities, which are bursting in the seams. In fact, the Delhi administration has already made a public announcement, promising its citizens a secondary school, offering ‘quality education’ in every locality. A wise move by a very savvy Chief Minister. Why?
After the immediate and expected reactions (signalled by an uproar among state-level bureaucrats) to the union minister Mr Kapil Sibal’s dictum on board examinations, its long term impacts on the Indian education machinery have now begun to unfold. Some are direct and rather heart warming.
About Environment Education Environment education has for long been limited to a narrow focus on nature and wildlife, topics on which a vast amount of literature already exists. The Environment Education Unit (EEU) at CSE was launched to initiate ecological literacy. EEU targets the future inheritors of Earth and tomorrow's planners and administrators. It promotes an understanding of the environment amongst participants to facilitate a push towards a sustainable and equitable future. The unit aims to come up with quality resource material and programmes for educational institutions, students and environmental educators to foster awareness and positive environmental action.

New Delhi, December 18, 2008: St Paul’s School, in Delhi’s Hauz Khas, had made it to the list in 2007 as well. But this year, it managed to really ‘break the mould’. And cornered the first position in the ‘Changemakers’ category of CSE’s Gobar Times Green Schools Awards.
Knowing is living, right? I mean, as an inhabitant of this crowded Planet I can survive only if I am aware of what is happening around me, and can mould my actions accordingly. The same applies to every living organism on earth.
