Weather Data-A Framework for its Collection and Sharing

Weather data serves as a critical socioeconomic driver in India, bridging the gap between scientific observation and ground-level decision-making. In the case of agriculture, timely and accurate information/alerts on extreme weather events is critical to prevent productivity and livelihood losses. Hyperlocal forecasts on precipitation and temperature can help in sowing, irrigation and harvesting. For crop insurance, past and present information on weather plays a crucial role.

India has a network of agencies that deal in weather data collection and dissemination, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) leads this network. But there are gaps and challenges which need to be understood and addressed to leverage the data in the interest of end-users like farmers.

In the third and final webinar of our series on ‘Towards Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture’, we bring you a discussion on the subject of weather data collection and sharing. CSE has also prepared a report on this, which highlights changes required in the current data collection and dissemination framework, such as allowing the IMD a greater role in ensuring quality and integration of weather data and expediting the ‘data and information sharing policy’ as proposed in the WINDS manual of 2023.

Please note: This is a free Zoom webinar, and registration is open to all. All those who register will receive an automatic confirmation. However, the webinar can accommodate a limited number of attendees on a first come-first served basis only. Therefore, please try to join 5 minutes before the scheduled time
