Clearing the Corridor: Transforming on-road transport to cut black carbon emissions in the Indo-Gangetic Plains

Across the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP), on road transport remains a dominant driver of severe air pollution episodes. Aging diesel fleets and heavy commercial transport rank as the second- or third-highest sources of toxic particulate matter and climate-warming black carbon in most regional cities. While Central and state frameworks under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) have introduced strategies for fleet modernisation, emissions monitoring, scrappage and electrification, implementation across states remains uneven. Because air pollution respects no state boundaries, isolated urban interventions are insufficient to mitigate regional health and climate risks.

This regional workshop aims to establish a harmonised, cross-state roadmap to drastically cut down on transport sector black carbon and diesel particulate emissions across the IGP airshed. This multi state, regulatory and scientific dialogue will bring together key actors across the regional transport and environmental ecosystems.
